Hick, Goodwin hit hundreds

LONDON - Graeme Hick, the Zimbabwean run-machine, scored 104 and then 105 not out as Worcestershire drew at home to Essex in Division 2 of the County Championship. The 41-year-old has confirmed that he will stay with Worcestershire next year for a 24th season.
Lancashire and Sussex, neck-and-neck for the Division 1 title, were both thwarted in rain-ruined seaside matches at Blackpool and Hove respectively. Another Zimbabwean, Murray Goodwin, hit 107 for Sussex in their draw with Hampshire for whom South African wicketkeeper-batsman Nic Pothas scored an unbeaten 122 and followed up with six victims in the Sussex's first innings. Meanwhile, Lancashire drew with Warwickshire.
Surrey, relegated last season, have clinched promotion back to the top flight. Skipper Mark Butcher and Ali Brown scored centuries in a 218-run win over Glamorgan at The Oval. ?John Hughes


Instant success for Dennis Wise

LONDON - Dennis Wise, 39, the combative ex-England midfielder whose high-profile playing career lasted 22 years, is enjoying a dream start to management in rural Wiltshire. His Swindon Town are the only one of 72 non-Premiership clubs with a 100 per cent record six matches into the season. Scotsman Lee Peacock's double strike clinched Swindon's latest success in League Two, 2-0 at Chester.
Nottingham Forest, the unbeaten one-time European champions, are setting the pace in League One after a thumping 4-0 home win over local rivals Chesterfield. Nicky Southall completed the scoring with a 20-yard shot.
The English and Scottish Premier Leagues return to action this weekend after a seven-day break for international matches. In England on Saturday, Everton host Liverpool in the big Merseyside derby and Manchester United are at home to Tottenham. Next day, West Ham parade their two new Argentinian signings, Carlitos Tevez and Javier Mascherano, in a home match against Aston Villa.The top match in Scotland sees Celtic, the champions, go to Aberdeen on Saturday. ?John Hughes
